3 Useful Writing Tools for Writers

Put on your writing hat and imagine yourself a potter (not the Hogwarts kind!). As a potter, you may first pour in your creativity to mold the clay, then dry it in a kiln, fire it, and add finishing touches with a glaze. Born of creativity, but perfected with tools, out comes an object which is a genuine work of art!

Your writing, regardless of its creativity, needs refining too. With the right tools, you can get rid of common glitches that plague creative pieces and put readers off.

We have shortlisted 3 of our favorite tools for writers. One of them might work for you. Read on!

1. Hemingway App

Like an autumn leaf caught in the wind, writers can get carried away too, leaving readers baffled and confused. The Hemingway app ensures that creativity doesn’t come at the expense of readability and stops your writing from wandering off a cliff.

Unlike most tools, the Hemingway app doesn’t focus on grammar or typos. Instead, it enhances readability by grading your writing and highlighting adverbs, passive voice, complex phrases, hard to read sentences and very hard to read sentences in different colors. The Hemingway app would probably flag that sentence!

If you’re writing to an audience on the internet, the Hemingway App is a must-have. By enhancing readability, the app keeps as many readers on your piece as possible.

2. ProWritingAid

ProWritingAid is a favorite of our founder, Kelsye Nelson—and for good reason.

This tool acts as a professional set of eyeballs on Kelsye’s work before she hits publish. Going beyond the basic spelling and grammar edits found in most writing tools, ProWritingAid flags complex sentences, suggests better word choices and detects repeated phrases. The in-depth analysis and suggestions are far more advanced than most of the tools we’ve tested, helping us improve our craft significantly. ProWritingAid is particularly adept at helping you strengthen your writing by changing passive voice to active.

If you and your team need a professional editor at your beck and call, ProWritingAid may work well for you too.

3. Grammarly

If you’re a writer, just getting your feet wet, then Grammarly is a writing tool not to miss! Grammarly starts off by doing the obvious grammar and spell check and then helps with writing enhancements on clarity, conciseness and tone. Much like the ProWritingAid, Grammarly has Chrome, Safari and Firefox web browser extensions too. The premium version delves deeper on writing feedback and offers even style and vocabulary enhancements.

For a beginner writer, the free version of Grammarly can do wonders in fixing embarrassing writing mistakes.
