Our Favorite Wordplay in Writing

Puns are our favorite play on words. They have their prose and cons, but a carefully delivered pun can elicit a chuckle or a groan – or both.

Intriguing, memorable and downright sticky, they can make people return to your work for the little dopamine kick.

Puns are also fun to make. They are often inspired by words that are similar in spelling, sound or meaning.

Here are a few popular examples:

  • I’ve been to the dentist many times, so I knew the drill.
  • I wanted to become a banker. Then I lost interest.
  • A boiled egg every morning is hard to beat.
  • He said I was average – but he was just being mean.
  • I would tell you a chemistry joke, but I know I wouldn’t get a reaction.
  • I walked into an Apple store. It was all glass doors and no Windows.

And a few writerly puns. . .

  • Authors bleed in type-Os.
  • Readers don’t have extra time. They’re booked.
  • The writer was kicked off the movie set because he was making a scene!
  • Being a writer is enjoyable. . . But the job of editor is more rewording.

So how does one create puns? You don’t need a degree. You need take only a few steps.

  1. Improve your vocabulary

Fall into a habit of capturing ideas with a notebook. You never know when a Eureka moment will strike.

Learn idioms, slangs and proverbs. Figures of speech can be manipulated into great puns.

2. Use a rhyming dictionary

There are plenty online. And they’re free. Explore them.

3. Read puns

Puns are a joy to read. Find as many as you can. Or try a fantastic book on puns.

4. Punish family & friends

Practice makes perfect. Test your puns on your close family and friends. They will more likely put up with futile attempts than strangers who land on your page.

Now use on the go! Sprinkling puns into your content such as marketing copy or blog posts can improve the stickiness of your work.

Besides, seven days without a pun can make one weak!
