A tiny percentage of authors make a living solely from book sales. Yet, we often hold on to the delusion that’s how “real writers” pay the bills. This is bunk.

You don’t need to leave your financial fate up to the fickle bestseller gods. Many well-respected authors that you know and love make a very comfortable living with a self-made career centered around writing. The big (not so) secret is that they don’t rely on book sales alone.

It’s simple economics. When each book sale scores you just a couple bucks in profit, you need to sell thousands upon thousands of books to make enough money to live off. You can tweak the math in your favor by adding more books, or creating offerings that net hundreds or even thousands in profits per sale.

It doesn’t matter if you write fiction or non-fiction, you released your books through traditional or self-publishing. Clever authors figured out so many ways to make a living centered on their books. The work is done for you. You simply need to look at your options and choose a strategy that feels right to you.
